Choose Water Everyday
The "Choose Water Everyday" Campaign is a collaboration between partner organisations in Victoria’s South West region – G21(Geelong Regional Alliance), City of Greater Geelong, Barwon Health, Colac Area Health, Golden Plains Shire, Borough of Queenscliffe, Hesse Rural Health, Colac Otway Shire, Surf Coast Shire, Barwon Water and Bellarine Community Health.
The aim of the campaign is to utilise social media platforms, as well as various communication tools to encourage water as the drink of choice in the G21 region everyday, and promote health and wellbeing by encouraging and supporting healthy behaviours.
The G21 Health and Wellbeing Pillar has a commitment to encouraging regular physical activity and healthy eating. More specifically, the working group focussing on Water & Sugar Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) have committed to increasing water consumption and reducing consumption of sugary drinks across the region.
Water is the best choice for keeping the body hydrated. It has no added sugar, no kilojoules and is not fizzy, so it is much better for your teeth and for maintaining a healthy weight. Soft drinks are highly acidic and this, along with high levels of added sugar, can damage teeth and lead to tooth decay. Water is also essential for brain function and can improve physical performance.
Keeping the body hydrated is essential for good health. Dehydration can lead to feelings of tiredness, thirst, weakness and lethargy. The senses become weak and psychological reaction times will be impaired. Water is the best choice for hydration and therefore swapping sugary drinks for water can help to improve health and wellbeing for everyone (WHO 2015).
